Ten years later, the Nine Lives Fabulous Style

By WF Staff December 30, 2019

It's been ten years since Nine's theatrical release. Some of Hollywood's greatest stars appeared in the splashy film-musical, including Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sopha Loren, Penélope Cruz, Judie Dench, Kate Hudson, and — wait for it— Fergie! The story followed the famous film director Guido Contini (Day-Lewis), in case you missed it, as he struggled to find peace in his life, juggling a wife, daughter, muse, agent and mother. Shenanigans followed; they sang songs. But it's not the plot points that resonate a decade later, but the glamorous fashion of the film that remains as fresh and enchanting as it is today.

The costume design was the brainchild of renowned American costume designer Colleen Atwood, who has been working on projects like Chicago, Geisha Memoirs, Apes Planet, and Alice in Wonderland. (She also collaborated on the forthcoming Bombshell film, turning Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Nicole Kidman into Fox News pundits.) Looking back to 2009, Atwood reminded Vogue of her dream of the wardrobe influenced by the film La Dolce Vita.

During the making of the film, Atwood consulted with all the stars of the film to find looks that matched their unique characters, adding that they were all "dressed in a way to dramatically push the plot forward." There was, for example, the legendary Loren who played the mother of Day-Lewis in the film; Atwood created for her a "modern glamorous housewife" feeling — strongly different from the wo costumes. For one scene, Kidman illuminated the screen wearing a strapless, satiny evening gown with a fitted bodice — a Hollywood royalty worthy outfit.

Many highlights in Nine included an unforgettable scene with Cruz, who portrays Carla's "sexy, delicate beauty" with plenty of sex appeal; she rolls around on a stage playing "A Call From The Vatican" in a lacey pink bustier— complete with sheer hosiery and satin heels to suit. Throughout Fergie's "Be Italian" number, there is an equally saucy fashion vibe where the singer who played the prostitute Zaraghina wears a black and red corset with mesh tights, flanked by backup dancers in matching lingerie-inspired getups.
