Since over 30 years, the most universally lauded and known one name in games has been: Mario, or Super Mario. The Super Mario franchise has been selling over 300 million copies of its games since it was first released for Nintendo in 1985, making it the best-selling video game series in history. One would be hard pressed to find someone on the planet who has ever played a video game that hasn't played the Super Mario series, or at least heard of it.
Super Mario Odyssey, released for Nintendo Switch in October 2017, is the latest in the Mario series. The game is a return to the "sandbox" style of the open world that was last seen in the sunshine of Super Mario. Odyssey has sold more than 10 million copies and is Switch's best-selling game. It has also received rave reviews from all of the internet's top video game websites.
Odyssey's popularity has also seen some of the Mario franchise's long-standing mysteries and concerns resurface. It involves questions like "Why does Mario have nipples but not a button on the belly?"And" Is it a hat or a head for Toad?"Odyssey creator Yoshiaki Koizumi referred to questioning minds in a recent video.
"I didn't really expect that to be a subject among fans, to be perfectly honest," he said. "When I heard people talking so much about Mario's belly button, it made me start thinking about whether we should revisit the subject on the design side." In reaction to the questions about Toad's head, Koizumi had this to say: "So, as it turns out, it's actually Toad's head," he said, "I'll have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that plays out.
